Surf Spots Piha is New Zealand's most famous surf beach, 40km (25mi) from the City of Sails and this black, iron-sand beach has a reputation for awesome surf. Piha tide is 3h later than Orewa Beach on the east coast. Semi-diurnal tides with 3m max tidal range. When warm tropical air hits the Tasman Sea, sudden lows can form around Lord Howe producing unusual NW swells combined with E winds if a high is sitting over Northland. During the summer period, high pressures dominate, blocking descending storms from the north and producing decent isobar fetch for the east coast with light onshores. November to March is cyclone season when solid groundswells may hit the NE coast, but as they move south, they turn into subtropical depressions, producing short-lived E-SE swells. When to Go Over 300 days of SW-W swells from 2-15ft arrive on the west coast along with the onshore winds. The Twin Coast Discovery Highway leads to most of the surf locations so it’s perfectly suited to campervan touring.
